27 x 3 = Victory!

I Woke up this morning with a sore back, both my shoulders were more sore than they ever been and I had the worst case of Bass Thumb ever known to mankind. This is how it happend........
Yesterday was my 27th birthday and it was the greatest birthday so far! To start off my Tio Andy, Luis, and myself got up at 5 o'clock in the morning to go fishing. We launch from J street at about 6:30 am and the San Diego Bay water was calm as can be. We paddle across the bay to the Coronado Cays. Right before we get to the Cays we decided to stop at these pylons right in front of the Cays. First couple of cast my Tio Andy throws out he gets hit on a three inch Big Hammer, sets the hook right through that suckers lip and starts reeling in! It was a nice size Spottie and now Luis and I have to catch up. We see birds diving right out side pylon 17 so we paddle over there. My uncle hooks up again and pulls in another spottie on the Big Hammer and tells me that they're hitting on the drop. I'm throwing out a Gary Yamamoto Shaky worm on a Owner shaky head jig with eight pound test Izorline right into the middle of the diving birds and on the drop BAM!!!!!!!!!!! Hell Yeah!!!!! First fish you catch of the day always gets the blood pumping right. Then I look over and Luis is pulling in these pretty big Smelt left and right on a tiny Krocadile. So tie one on to my other rod and start casting and next thing you know POW!!!!!!! I'm pulling the Smelt in left and right!!!! So my Tio Andy ties on a Kroc and we are all pulling in these Smelt! We switch spots moving more into the Cays and I'm throwing my Shaky Head Worm again and bump, bump....bump....BAM!!!!!!! I hook up and pull in a Halibut! It was awesome. At this time Luis has caught so many fish we lost count and Tio Andy was at like 10 along with me. We paddle up one of the channels in the Cays and fish there for a while pulling in one or two each before we pull up to a near shore to take a quick brake.
We get back on the water and head to a different channel in the Cays. We go up and down the channel but by this time the fishing slowed down so much we were thinking of leaving. But then my Tio Andy cast out and I do as well. BAM WE HOOK UP AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! It was crazy! Two nice size Spotties! Now the blood is pumping again. I keep casting there but just nibbles. So we move out to look for Luis because he keeps disappearing. He's at the mouth of the channels of the Cays throwing out that Kroc catching those Smelt. We sit there for a while pulling in Smelt my Tio Andy even hooked up on a pretty big Halibut but he got off right at the boat! DAMN!!!! We cross back over the bay so we are close to where we launched from before it gets dark. At this time I got 13, Tio Andy has 14, and Luis has who knows how many! So we get to these pylons right in front of the spot we launched from and start casting out to get our last fish before the day is over. I'm throwing out what we call "white magic", it's a 4 inch pearl white mullet Gulp, on a 3/8 ounce jig head. First cast I get bit and pull in a spottie!
Then another! Another! Another!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!! I'm screaming louder than Mike Iaconelli!!! I'm hitting em back to back sometimes three in a row!!!!! THIS IS BANANAS!!!!!! My Tio and I are tripping out on this and Luis is off doing his own thing. I literally caught 13 fish in less than 2 hours! It gets real cold so we get out the water. Luis had about 25, my Tio Andy had 16 and I had 26. Then we realize it was my 27th birthday on the 27th of December and I got 26 fish. I had to get back in and catch one more. I did just that and the loudest scream came over the bay like the roar of a storm over the open waters of the pacific ocean.....no seriously though it was loud. The day was nuts. 27 fish on my 27th birthday on the 27th of December!!!!! I'll never be able to do that again as long as I live.
After that crazy day we get to my Tio Andy's house and my wife and kids, Tia Selma along with my cousin Anastacio and his girl are there surprising me with a party for my birthday! Thanks guys I love you. So after all that I wake up sore with bass thumb, look at my thumb and smile...... Till next time have fun fishing!

Just One Please........

So day two of our three day fishing adventure begins at around noon in Mission Bay. My Tio Andy and I decided to bring our buddy Luis out for his second time yak fishing. The tide was changing which gave us water movement and usually keeps the fish active right? Wrong! We were trying everything from jigs with gulp to spinners and live ghost shrimp but we couldn't get a nibble if our lives depended on it. We were moving from spot to spot trying to get something going but it just seemed hopeless. So we go to the same bridge as last time it's the one just before or east of the jetty. I'm casting out my jig with a glow in the dark gulp mullet by the pylon. The waters moving so fast under the bridge that I'm doing more paddling then fishing. Then I thought to myself what the hell am I doing I got an anchor! So I throw that out and it only slows down my drift but it worked because two cast after that I hook up. HELL YEEEAAAH! I start reeling this baby in and wouldn't you know my first Calico. It was awesome. Now let me just say that the initial bite made me think it would be at least a pound and a half but when I pulled it in the boat the little guy must of been four inches. Even though it was small it's always cool when you catch a species you've never caught before. After that It's dead for hours not one of us is getting anything. We go from that bridge to Fisherman's Channel and back with out getting a bite. I'm pitching near rocks, I try the grass lines, I'm working sandy areas and nothing. I mean absolutely nothing. So in a last effort we go to this small marina with rental pedal and sail boats. The dock comes out and turns at a 90 degree angle making a little cove like area. I got a drop shot out with live ghost shrimp on it and I'm working a jig at the same time. No takers. Luis decides to leave that spot and go work the rocks that were near by. Maybe a half hour in he hooks up on an Opal Eye then a Mackerel back to back.So my tio and I decide to go over there and give it a shot. Nothing. As we are headed back to where we launched from my tio is trying everything not to get skunked. I'm trying everything to catch at least one more to catch up with Luis. They call it a day I cast one last time and BAM! OH YEAH BABY! I reel in a croaker that had orange stripes from tail to head. It was awesome. Ending the day with a catch on the last cast is killer. The day ended up being Me-2, Luis-2, Tio Andy-0. First time I seen that happen. I think it's just slowing down because of season and temperature. I remember this summer we weren't leaving with less than 8-10 keepers each! Tomorrow I'll tell you about the last day of our adventure. Until then good luck fishing!

First Post!

First things first. I'm new at bloging and I'm doing this completely on my own. I'm also pretty new to kayak fishing but I will tell you that I've got one of the best schooling me (my Tio Andy) so don't worry. I've been yak fishing for about six months now every single weekend sometimes twice even three times in a week every week. I do got to say that being introduced to kayak fishing is the best thing that ever happened to me next to my wife and kids. Thanks Tio. Catching a fish in a kayak is more personal and in your face than a boat can ever get and that's what keeps me coming back. All kayak fishing is extreme and that's a fact. I do most of my fishing in San Diego, CA one of the greatest fisheries on the earth.

So let's get right in to it. This past week me and my tio decided to to a three day run at Mission and San Diego Bay. The first day was an evening session on Thanksgiving at Mission bay. We launched at about 5:30 p.m. The water was glass perfect for paddling but not for fishing you would think. But first cast I'm getting bumbed but no takers. I got a light tackle set up of course because I'm just in the bay. I got a seven foot medium shimano rod with the shimano sedona reel and six pound cajun line. We move out over to Fisherman's Channel and that's where my Tio Andy hooks up on a nice size Spottie (Spotted Bay Bass). About 15 minutes after that I hook up on a Spottie as well. We sit there casting for about another hour but nothings hitting so we move out again this time we go to the jetty. I'm throwing a quarter ounce jig with a four inch pearl white gulp mullet next to the pylons under the bridge and bouncing it off the bottom letting the drift take me to the other side of the pylon. On the second cast I'm drifting then BAM! I get hooked up and pull a Sandie (Sand Bass) in the yak. I get two more using the same technique. It's four to one at this point and I'm winning. My Tio's not getting bit so he wants to check out another spot and being as nice as I am I go with him to a spot by the bait barge. I'm getting no bites and about 45 minutes in my Tio Andy is reeling in his drop shot rig to recast it and theres a halibut on the hook! It was nuts! After that we weren't getting hit no matter what we did so we called it a night. It ended up being four to two. I won sucka!!! Next time I'll tell you about the other two trips we took. For now good luck fishing.
