I Woke up this morning with a sore back, both my shoulders were more sore than they ever been and I had the worst case of Bass Thumb ever known to mankind. This is how it happend........
Yesterday was my 27th birthday and it was the greatest birthday so far! To start off my Tio Andy, Luis, and myself got up at 5 o'clock in the morning to go fishing. We launch from J street at about 6:30 am and the San Diego Bay water was calm as can be. We paddle across the bay to the Coronado Cays. Right before we get to the Cays we decided to stop at these pylons right in front of the Cays. First couple of cast my Tio Andy throws out he gets hit on a three inch Big Hammer, sets the hook right through that suckers lip and starts reeling in! It was a nice size Spottie and now Luis and I have to catch up. We see birds diving right out side pylon 17 so we paddle over there. My uncle hooks up again and pulls in another spottie on the Big Hammer and tells me that they're hitting on the drop. I'm throwing out a Gary Yamamoto Shaky worm on a Owner shaky head jig with eight pound test Izorline right into the middle of the diving birds and on the drop BAM!!!!!!!!!!! Hell Yeah!!!!! First fish you catch of the day always gets the blood pumping right. Then I look over and Luis is pulling in these pretty big Smelt left and right on a tiny Krocadile. So tie one on to my other rod and start casting and next thing you know POW!!!!!!! I'm pulling the Smelt in left and right!!!! So my Tio Andy ties on a Kroc and we are all pulling in these Smelt! We switch spots moving more into the Cays and I'm throwing my Shaky Head Worm again and bump, bump....bump....BAM!!!!!!! I hook up and pull in a Halibut! It was awesome. At this time Luis has caught so many fish we lost count and Tio Andy was at like 10 along with me. We paddle up one of the channels in the Cays and fish there for a while pulling in one or two each before we pull up to a near shore to take a quick brake.
We get back on the water and head to a different channel in the Cays. We go up and down the channel but by this time the fishing slowed down so much we were thinking of leaving. But then my Tio Andy cast out and I do as well. BAM WE HOOK UP AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! It was crazy! Two nice size Spotties! Now the blood is pumping again. I keep casting there but just nibbles. So we move out to look for Luis because he keeps disappearing. He's at the mouth of the channels of the Cays throwing out that Kroc catching those Smelt. We sit there for a while pulling in Smelt my Tio Andy even hooked up on a pretty big Halibut but he got off right at the boat! DAMN!!!! We cross back over the bay so we are close to where we launched from before it gets dark. At this time I got 13, Tio Andy has 14, and Luis has who knows how many! So we get to these pylons right in front of the spot we launched from and start casting out to get our last fish before the day is over. I'm throwing out what we call "white magic", it's a 4 inch pearl white mullet Gulp, on a 3/8 ounce jig head. First cast I get bit and pull in a spottie!
Then another! Another! Another!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!! I'm screaming louder than Mike Iaconelli!!! I'm hitting em back to back sometimes three in a row!!!!! THIS IS BANANAS!!!!!! My Tio and I are tripping out on this and Luis is off doing his own thing. I literally caught 13 fish in less than 2 hours! It gets real cold so we get out the water. Luis had about 25, my Tio Andy had 16 and I had 26. Then we realize it was my 27th birthday on the 27th of December and I got 26 fish. I had to get back in and catch one more. I did just that and the loudest scream came over the bay like the roar of a storm over the open waters of the pacific ocean.....no seriously though it was loud. The day was nuts. 27 fish on my 27th birthday on the 27th of December!!!!! I'll never be able to do that again as long as I live.
After that crazy day we get to my Tio Andy's house and my wife and kids, Tia Selma along with my cousin Anastacio and his girl are there surprising me with a party for my birthday! Thanks guys I love you. So after all that I wake up sore with bass thumb, look at my thumb and smile...... Till next time have fun fishing!
